In this installation, Sean R. Merchant uses the division of space created by windows to experiment with the interpretation of the space itself. Merchant believes that windows are selective divisions in space. They allow elements of one side to effect the other side while still retaining the properties of a physical barrier. In this set of circumstances, the dialogue between the outside and the inside is moderated by a clear substance that separates the two, while still allowing us to view through this very barrier.
This division can be altered in ways that utilize both the properties of the inside and outside, making the window less defined as a barrier, and expanding the window's purpose into one of imaginative engagement. Merchant's work is designed to provide a means for exterior elements to be extended into the interior space.
